A BRIEF HISTORY...

canoetrip

A native of Canada, Harris spent the first nine years of her life living in the heart of downtown Toronto before moving to the tiny village of Potten End in rural Hertfordshire, England. For the next five years, she sported a blue polyester uniform and discovered the joys of field hockey and netball. Right before her fourteenth birthday, her family crossed the pond again--this time to live in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The acres of farmland were a far cry from the canals and castles that painted the English countryside, but she quickly fell in love with midwesterners worldly outlook and found beauty in the pristine lakes and endless hiking paths.

Her passion for reporting began in high school when she started writing local stories for "The Highlander" newspaper. She pursued a career in broadcast journalism to wed her knack for writing with her love of meeting new people and sharing their stories. Before graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in May, 2007, she had worked at a variety of news organizations including the college television station, community television station, WEAU-TV Channel 13, and WTMJ4 Channel 4. Her aspiration to leapfrog her way over the mid-size markets and land in the network waned as the news industry's landscape changed. Her excitement for the dramatic world of television news evaporated as she watched the invisible wall that separates the newsroom and the sales department slowly crumble before her eyes.

Following in the footsteps of many a well-versed journalist, she chartered over treacherous waters and entered the world of non-profit public relations. Through planning events and conducting media interviews, she implemented effective, efficient communications campaigns to build awareness of Special Olympics Wisconsin and Junior Achievement Wisconsin.

Harris returns to the classroom part-time this fall as a graduate student after being accepted into the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's communications program. She looks forward to solidifying her knowledge in the field of public relations.
